Westport offers three fabulous Seafood Markets, which are open year-round, offering the Pacific's freshest seafood. So what makes it the freshest? Westport's markets purchase and process their seafood directly from local fishing vessels, each of which represents an individual small business and family. The seafood goes from ocean to boat to market. Unlike some of the seafood you find in your local grocery store, seafood from one of our markets has not taken a long road trip to its destination. Our locally harvested seafood is sustainably caught by local fishers, using primarily hook and line or pots. Very little bycatch occurs in these fisheries, so you can feel good about your purchase and the food you are eating.

So what if you want to purchase fish in the off-season? Our markets process fish directly from the fishing vessels into their sales and production. They freeze and vacuum pack fresh fish for purchase in the off-season. The quality is superb as it is processed locally within two to three days of catch. Some fish is frozen at sea (FAS) onboard the fishing vessels within hours of catch. This means that our frozen seafood is of a higher quality than what you may find "fresh" at your local grocery store as it can take up to seven days to get processed and to market. Pro-tip, a seafood market should never smell fishy. Fresh fish has little to no odor.

Feeling crabby? The PNW's coveted Dungeness crab is caught most of the year in differing volumes. And you'll find that the fishery and markets demand different prices throughout the season. The peak season is typically December through February, and 90% of the volume is caught during these months. Typically, there is less production in the spring and summer, and the price goes up significantly for the remainder of the season. The international demand for live crab will also impact the market price of crab.

Frozen crab production occurs during the peak season and provides a year-round supply of crab to market. The markets primarily produce whole cooked crabs, crab sections (body and legs), and crab meat. Crab is delivered live and processed within hours of delivery. You can be assured that your frozen crab is of the highest quality. It's also good to note that the crab season is managed effectively and sustainably. Only fully mature, male crabs are harvested, preserving the future of the fishery. From oysters to halibut, visit our local seafood markets for a variety of fresh, locally sourced seafood!
